Yes, No & What I Want

Today's goal: accept something politely, decline something politely, and ask for what you want using Je voudrais.

Two ways to respond

When you want to accept:

Tu veux un biscuit ?
Oui, je voudrais un biscuit, s'il te plaît.
Voilà !
Merci !

When you want to decline:

Tu veux un gâteau ?
Non merci. Je veux de l'eau, s'il te plaît.
Bien sûr — voilà !

Read on paper first. Then practise both versions out loud.

Word bank

  • Oui = Yes
  • Non = No
  • Je voudrais… = I would like… (polite)
  • Je veux… = I want… (direct)
  • Non merci = No thank you
  • Voilà = Here you go / There it is

6 words today. Notice: Je voudrais and Je veux both mean "I want" — but Je voudrais is softer and more polite. Use it when asking an adult or in a shop.

Warm-Up

Do this on paper before anything else.

Write on paper

  1. Copy Oui. and Non. — 4 times each.
  2. Copy Je voudrais… — 4 times.
  3. Copy Je veux… — 4 times.
  4. Copy Non merci. — 3 times.
  5. Copy Voilà ! — 3 times.
  6. Write the full sentence: Je voudrais de l'eau, s'il te plaît. — 2 times.

Tip: Je voudrais = "I would like" — three syllables: Je · vou · drais. Say it as you write.

Read each line, then decide: would you use voudrais (polite) or veux (direct)?
